THE RUNDOWN | Gazans came out en masse to protest the Bahrain conference and continue the Friday protests against Israel's blockade on the Strip. Today, however, Israelis from the country's south also came out, protesting against Israel's inaction on the bodies of Israeli soldiers held captive ny Hamas. Our Yoav Borowitz reports.

Gaza's Health Ministry said at least 40 Palestinians were injured as thousands of protesters gathered at various flashpoints along the border Friday evening, ahead of a US-led "economic workshop" in Bahrain to launch President Donald Trump's long awaited peace initiative.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that 5,800 Gazans participated in the protests, with several reported instances of attempts to damage the security fence and hurl explosive devices at Israeli troops.

IDF forces responded with riot dispersal means, the army said.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said that a paramedic was among the injured.

The clashes come following weeks of relatively quiet due to "understandings" reached in the wake of a serious escalation last month, as the United States prepares to host the economic conference in Bahrain meant to be the first step of its peace plan to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a rare address to the foreign press on Thursday, Hamas' leader Ismail Haniyeh threatened to crumble the "understandings" reached with Israel on the border should the Bahrain summit be held, claiming it was part of the US and Israeli plan to "destroy the Palestinian national project."
