The debate over asylum seekers reached full volume yesterday with Labor accusing the Prime Minister of sending a megaphone message to people smugglers that Australia's borders are "open for business" again.

Labor says Scott Morrison is talking down Australia's border protection regime by deliberately misrepresenting the new medivac laws, which will make it easier for refugees on Manus and Nauru to be transferred to Australia for medical treatment.

Opposition Immigration spokesman Shayne Neumann said the PM has become a "walking, talking billboard" for the boat trade.

Preparations are now being made for up to 300 refugees and asylum seekers to come to Australia under the first wave of medical transfers.
